Public Policy Reform
The Change Lab supports communities and nonprofit organizations to advance evidence-informed policy solutions that address systemic barriers. Through research, collaboration, and engagement with policymakers and community partners, we help develop initiatives and shape more equitable public policies that improve outcomes for marginalized communities.
Bill 112
The Change Lab supported collaborative work across Peel to address Bill 112, the dissolution of Peel, which would have eliminated the coordinating body for most social services in the Region in just 18 months.
The efforts brought together over 100 nonprofits, local unions, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, to express shared concerns about the process. The issues raised led to the reversal of the planned legislation.
Defend Disability Coalition
The Change Lab supported the development of the Defend Disability Coalition, a network for nonprofit organizations and people with lived experience responding to a planned redefinition of disability that would have resulted in a $500,000 reduction in supports to people facing disabilities.
The two-year effort led to the abandonment of the planned change.
Defending the Transition Child Benefit
The Change Lab convened over a dozen community legal clinics and children’s services to address cuts to the Transition Child Benefit, which provided $65 million annually in supports for children in families facing crises.
The effort persuaded the Government of Ontario to reverse the cut.
